We’ve all been there. Too much coffee can ruin our day, there is no arguing about that. However, since the matter is far more complicated, I’ll get into it later in the article. For now, let me tell you that there are low acid coffee brands which can help you on this matter.
And, if you think that these require complicated procedures, let me just point you here, to see that it doesn’t have to be that way.
Where To Begin?
It is my preference to start from my experience and go to from there. This is what I recommend you too. Go through the article, and see if you have any symptoms which will be described, and decide from there.
Of course,I can’t advise you to quit coffee entirely, I’m not that cruel. Instead, you will probably have to adjust only a few things and still be able to enjoy your favorite beverage. In any case, let’s get to the basics, shall we?
What Is Coffee Acid? Is It Dangerous?
I won’t scare you on this matter, but coffee contains about thirty different types of acid. Before you panic, don’t worry, these quantities are small, and most of those can be found in other food. For example, citric acid is found in oranges and lemons.
Those are not harmful, and in fact, some of those can help you reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Others will help you lose weight, but this doesn’t mean that you should increase intake of coffee two or three times, no, it will backfire if you do so.
How To Know If I Have Trouble With Coffee Acid, And What To Do?
There are several signs that your favorite coffee brand isn’t right for you. I’ll get to that one by one, and in the end, I’ll give you several solutions. Right, let’s get to it.
Is It Possible That My Teeth Are Sensitive?
In one word – YES! In fact, this is something I’ve felt by myself. After a longer period of higher coffee quantity per day, I’ve noticed that my teeth are sensitive to changes. Cold water was particularly troublesome. Luckily, a friend of mine is a dentist, and he told me what the problem is.
Namely, pH factor, as you may know, determines the acidity or alkalinity of every matter. With 0 being completely acid, and 14 entirely alkaline, this scale will tell you what you are ingesting. Water is pH neutral with factor 7, while coffee usually sits around 5, which is mildly acidic.
Although this is not a big deal, with increased consumption of coffee, this week acid slowly erodes the protective layer of the teeth, and thus they become sensitive. Also, you might feel a “metallic” taste in your mouth as well.
Acid Reflux And Similar Inconveniences
It is only natural that increased intake of coffee makes your stomach feel as if you have eaten live coal. Burning, stinging and other symptoms typical for gastrointestinal problems can appear. Again, although the acid in coffee is mild, after a more extended period, it will lower pH of the stomach, causing this sensation.
Moreover, you might feel chest pain, which is a bit more severe signal that you should cut down on coffee. Throw in an increased risk of ulcer, and it is clear why you need to do so.
So, How To Eliminate Coffee Acid?
In general, there are three ways of reducing this ingredient, so choose the one which suits you best.
- Add calcium – if you didn’t know, calcium would neutralize the acid, and those who prefer coffee with milk or cream will have less trouble than those who are consuming it clean. If you need to look after calorie intake, there are many fat-free supplements which can do just fine.
- Take some other blend into consideration – generally speaking, not all coffee blends have the same pH level. For example, suppliers will opt for Robusta beans, which are cheaper. However, Arabica has a lower level of acid but is more expensive because it is more challenging to grow it. To make things better, opt for those which are roasted for more extended period since more acid is destroyed in the process.
- Change brewing method – another thing which can help you cut off the acid is the way you prepare your brew. For example, cold brew is a bit longer process but removes about 70% of acid. If you don’t like coffee made this way, let me introduce you to French press.
So, there it is. Reasons on why you should switch to low acid coffee brands are at your disposal. Of course, I hope that you don’t have these issues and that you may enjoy your cup of happiness the way you want.
